HISTORY
The Maranatha Shabiba Conference was launched in December 1998, driven by a heartfelt desire to provide a vibrant, Christ-centered retreat for Middle Eastern Christian young adults in the Chicago area. With God’s guidance, and a simple and prayerful vision of Bisher and Phoebe Rihani, what began as an intimate gathering of just 25 attendees quickly grew—both in number and in spiritual depth. What started small has become a powerful movement impacting lives across North America and the globe.

As the years passed, the Lord expanded the conference’s reach, drawing young adults from cities across the U.S. and Canada. With the growing presence of second-generation Middle Easterners, the need for English-language programming became clear. In 2006, the Chicago Maranatha Conference united with Lansing, Michigan’s Shabiba Fest—led by Roger and Aleen Srouji—forming what is now known as Maranatha Shabiba. This unity ushered in a new season of ministry, offering dynamic content in both Arabic and English, and eventually transitioning to English-only to better serve the next generation.
By 2016, Maranatha Shabiba had grown into one of the largest Christian conferences for Middle Eastern young adults outside of the Middle East. Still, our simple mission has remained the same: to create a space where young people can encounter Jesus, build lifelong friendships, and grow deeper in their faith—all in an uplifting and welcoming environment.
Though our roots are Middle Eastern, our doors are open to all. Everyone is welcome.
